Jan Dalchow (born 1968)

Jeg elsker hvem jeg vil, a film about young people coming out, sparked intense debate. Within NRK, strong voices pushed to censor parts of the content, claiming the film contained 'gay propaganda'.

In his life story interview, Dalchow shares memories of growing up in Oslo and how he became aware of his sexual orientation at an early age. He also recounts the ten-year journey of writing, directing, and releasing three queer documentaries, each of which made a significant impact in its own way. One of the most personal stories he shares is how, many years later, one of the participants in his films would become his husband.

In the video excerpt below, Dalchow reflects on the emotional weight of working on the documentary BE—Dirty, Sinful Me, and how it caused a stir in Norwegian public discourse when it premiered in 2000.

The full life story interview is available at Skeivt arkiv, part of the Special Collections at the University Library in Bergen.

Skeivt arkiv met Gullruten winner and Amanda-nominated director Dalchow in Oslo, in April 2017.
